Please join me and Lois Griffel for a workshop in Tubac, Arizona.

Lois has just completed her second book, painting Impressionist Color. She bases her workshops on many of the new ideas presented in the book, such as painting with brushes, easier grasp on the color theory as applied to familiar painting techniques. Lois told me she has seen amazing results in half the time from her workshops in the past 3 years.
I will be providing directions, supplies and travel tips, and other workshop information . Following is a description. general plan for the workshop and and other pertinent and background information the day prior to our scheduled painting location for that day.  April 1-3, 2011 Field Sketching 10:00am-4:00pm (lunch 12pm-1pm)

3-Day Workshop: $170.00

An outdoor drawing class designed for beginning and intermediate student. Although drawing can be done with great detail, our approach will be less about detail and more about capturing the general character of an object or scene with a looser, free-form technique (instructor will demo), suitable for the beginner and intermediate student. We'll draw some of the local Tubac architecture, including one 1/2 day sketching the Tumacacori Mission. Other subjects we'll explore are some of the trees and plants of the desert. The materials we'll be using are pencils, pen & ink, ink washes (brushed ink), and watercolor (optional). We'll work on standard drawing pads, as well as small watercolor pads for ink and/or watercolor washes. The goal of the class is to improve the student's basic drawing skills, using line, shape, light & dark (values), form, and minimal perspective.

Day 1: Morning will be spent with brief introductions and then a drawing demo provided by the instructor. Day 1 will focus on the drawing basics of line and shape, along with some "seeing" techniques. The first project will be to practice these basic elements of drawing, using a photograph as the resource (of your own or provided by instructor). After lunch we'll go outdoors to apply these same techinques, but working from life. Instructor will also demo in the afternoon.

Day 2: Morning will begin with a short critique of student's drawings from Day 1. The critique will be done as a group. The rest of the morning will focus on how to add light & dark, in other words, shading and values (shades of gray) to give your drawings a sense of form and the illusion of 3-dimensions. After that we'll discuss how to draw objects in perspective, which includes a.) Linear pespective (1 and 2 point perspective),  and b.) Atmospheric perspective. Because of the complexity of perspective drawing, this part of the workshop is only meant as an introduction. Demos of all techniues will be provided by the instructor. After lunch, we'll venture back outdoors to draw from life, applying these techniques of shading, value, form, and perspective (particularly for architectural studies).

Day 3: Morning will begin with a short critique of drawings from Day 2, again as a group. After the critique, we'll drive over to Tumacacori Mission to setup outdoors. Students will have the option of drawing the mission or any subject of their choice on the mission grounds. It's suggested that students bring a lunch to the mission so we can continue our discussions about our drawings over lunch. We'll continue to draw on the mission grounds until 3:00, at which time we'll return to the class room for a final critique until 4:00 p.m.

Throughout the workshop the instructor will visit each student individually to discuss their drawings and answer questions. And hopefully we'll all have a few laughs along the way.
